The Seine

Water takes the color of everything above it, and in The Seine Pierre Bonnard lets the river swallow a whole sky. The surface trembles with broken strokes of violet, rose, and gold. Short dabs of unblended pigment build the current, lilac against pale orange, green flickering where a bank bends. No line pins anything down. Trees along the far shore soften into their own reflection, and the water carries more color than the sky. Best in a hallway or reading nook, anywhere the light shifts across the day, so the river keeps its shimmer going.
