The Sea at Techirghiol

Water fills the frame at Techirghiol, its surface broken into short horizontal strokes of blue, green and pearl grey. Gheorghe Petrascu names the lagoon plainly and lets the light do the arguing. The brushwork is loaded and unhurried, oil dragged in thick ridges across the water, the far shore a low band of ochre and dusty violet. Skies here are pale rather than dramatic, so the eye keeps returning to the dense, rippling color of the lake itself, where cobalt cools into jade near the foreground. A seascape of this weight belongs on the wall of a study or a reading nook, somewhere quiet where the horizon can be stared at at length.
