The Sea at Kavarna

Heavy water rolls toward a Bulgarian shore in The Sea at Kavarna, a coastal composition by the Romanian painter Gheorghe Petrascu. Deep greens and cold blues fill the foreground, the swell built in thick, deliberate strokes of oil that give each wave weight and shadow. Along the horizon, a pale sky presses flat against the water, while low cliffs and a hint of shoreline anchor the scene in the rocky Black Sea coast. The brushwork reads almost sculptural up close, pigment heaped where foam would gather. It suits a study or seaside reading room, anywhere open sky feels welcome.
