The Roses by the Window

In The Roses by the Window, blooms crowd a shallow vase at an open casement. Crimson heads tip into the light as Pyotr Konchalovsky sets his flowers on the threshold between dim interior and garden. Oil paint sits thick on the surface: petals built in loaded strokes of vermilion and rose, leaves cut from deep viridian, glass panes scraped back to a pale wash. Sunlight pools on the sill, and the vessel casts a soft shadow across the table.
