A rutted dirt road cuts between bare, brittle trunks in The road. Dry wood, a landscape by Pyotr Konchalovsky. The Russian post-impressionist gives dead timber its full weight, painted without sentiment. Pale deadwood dominates the foreground, bark built up in thick strokes of grey, umber and bone white. The lane runs as a band of ochre and dusty rose, scuffed with wheel ruts, while scrub grass and a washed-out sky hold the upper register. A study or country hallway suits it, a place where gravel tones and twisted branches sit easily against plain plaster and worn leather.
