The River Seine at Chatou

Green water drags past the towpath while vermilion trees burn along the bank, the view Maurice de Vlaminck seized at the height of his Fauvist years in The River Seine at Chatou. Paint sits thick on the surface, squeezed from the tube in unblended ridges of chrome orange, cobalt and viridian. White houses with red roofs hold the far shore. Reflections break into short horizontal dabs, and the sky churns in broad, loaded sweeps of blue. It belongs in a dining room or a bright study, where the hot reds against cold green can hold a long wall without any help from nearby furnishings.
