The River. Leafless Trees

Cold water slides between bare trunks in The river. Leafless trees, a landscape by Pyotr Konchalovsky where late autumn strips the bank down to branch, mud and moving current. Paint sits thick along the trunks, dragged in raw umber and olive ochre, while the current below carries a single band of greyed green. Branches cross a bone-white sky in quick loaded strokes, a lattice of dark line that never quite closes. Frost sits in the pale highlights. A study with slate floors and low winter light would meet it on equal terms, or an entryway where guests pause to pull on gloves before the cold.
