The River in the Morning

Morning mist thins over slow water, and pale sun finds the current first. Pyotr Konchalovsky caught that exact hour in The river in the morning, brushing it quickly, before the light changed. Oil paint sits thick, dragged in broad horizontal strokes that follow the drift. Lemon sky breaks into rose at the horizon, willows on the far bank dissolve into blue grey, and reeds along the near edge catch a low ochre glare. Where the brush lifted, the reflection wavers. A riverbank this hushed belongs in a study or an entryway, a first view for anyone who wakes with the day and likes it slow.
