The River in Autumn

A slow current carries its cargo of fallen leaves past banks already gone to rust and gold in The River in Autumn, a Gustave Loiseau landscape built from short, searching strokes. Grey green oil paint, dragged in horizontal marks, makes the surface shiver and break around each mirrored trunk. Willows and poplars hold their last foliage in ochre and copper, and a low fence line slips along the far bank. Loose crosshatching through the branches gives every bough a brittle edge. It belongs in a study or a quiet reading nook, where cool water and ember colored trees settle a room without ever going fully still.
