The Riches of Ukraine

Golden wheat fills the foreground, heads heavy and crowded to the edge of the picture. The Riches of Ukraine by Oleksa Novakivskyi sets the harvest itself as the subject, no figures needed. Novakivskyi paints the grain in thick ochre and amber strokes, stubble fields behind it cooling into gray green, and a sky pressed low with humidity, cloud banks in slate and pale gold stacked along the horizon. The brushwork drags and dabs, pigment standing off the surface where the sun catches the stalks. Everything in the frame says abundance without ornament. It belongs in a dining room or a farmhouse kitchen, anywhere bread is broken.
