The Red Rocks

Red granite boulders shoulder into the tide in The Red Rocks, a coastal landscape by Gustave Loiseau where stone takes on the color of rust and ember. The rock faces come up in short, loaded strokes of vermilion, ochre and rose madder, each boulder edged with violet shadow. Between the formations the sea runs cold green under a pale, scrubbed sky, and tufts of gorse cling to the crevices. Set in a study, stairway landing or reading nook, it brings a salt wind and the hush of a northern shore into the room.
