The Possessed Dostoevsky Illustration

A hunched conspirator bends close to a single candle in a cramped provincial drawing room, the scene Dobuzhinsky imagined for his illustration to the Dostoevsky novel The Possessed. Fine crosshatching builds the walls until the patterned wallpaper seems to press inward, while washes of violet grey pool in every corner. Papers lie scattered across a tilted table, an inkwell waits, and the face stays half swallowed by shadow as the pen pauses mid sentence. It belongs in a study lined with Russian literature, or beside a deep armchair in a reading nook, where that flame appears never to have gone out.
