The Port of Saint-Tropez

Masts crowd the harbor at Saint-Tropez, thin verticals stacked against a sky held in pale wash. Albert Marquet builds the scene from restraint, letting the water carry the color. The moored boats read as dark sigatures on grey-green sea, their rigging drawn with a light hand. Along the quay, low ochre facades and huddled rooftops stay quiet, so the harbor water, brushed in broad cool planes, does all the talking. Marquet painted his beloved French ports this way, saving saturation for the reflections alone. Suited to a study, a hallway, or anywhere a window onto the Mediterranean would be welcome.
