The Pont des Arts

Foot traffic crosses the Pont des Arts in loose silhouettes, pedestrians rendered as flecks of violet and ochre against the pale deck of the iron footbridge. Bonnard paints the Seine as a sheet of molten pewter, broken by barge wakes and the shimmer of reflected sky. On the far bank the Louvre recedes into a haze of pearl and rose, its long facade suggested rather than drawn. Warm lamplight pools along the quays while rooftops dissolve into a lavender dusk. A study, a hallway beside a window, or a reading nook would give this river view the quiet wall it deserves.
