The Point Wharf, Mosman Bay

Timber piles rise from green water, and a wooden wharf crosses the whole foreground of The Point Wharf, Mosman Bay. Arthur Streeton built the scene from loose, loaded strokes of light and air. Moored dinghies rest on ultramarine depths beside painted hulls, reflections breaking in ripples of lead white and cerulean. Behind the deck, eucalyptus headland and pale Sydney sandstone take the gold of late afternoon, haze softening the far shore. Brushwork stays quick and open, every plank and swell suggested rather than finished. Hang it in a study or an entryway against soft grey walls, where cool blues and warm golds carry the day.
