The Old Pond

Still water fills the frame of The Old Pond, a quiet California landscape by Granville Redmond, where a pond lies low among reeds and holds the sky in its surface. Broken brushwork builds the bank in olive and sage, with ochre grasses at the waterline and a stand of trees mirrored upside down. Redmond painted the California landscape in a tonalist key, and the muted violet light here reads as late afternoon haze. A study corner, a hallway with a low bench, or a reading nook beside a north window would suit its hush; the greens stay calm under lamplight.
