The Old Bridge, France

An arched stone bridge crosses a sunlit river in this canvas by Guy Rose, its weathered span reflected in slow water below. Painted during his French years, the scene carries the broken color and silvery light of American Impressionism filtered through Giverny. Warm ochre masonry holds the arches, while lavender shadows pool beneath them and willow foliage frames the bank in loose, feathered strokes. Dappled reflections tremble across the surface, and the sky above dissolves into pale, humid blue. Every passage is built from small touches of pigment that let the light do the talking.
