The Oise in Winter

The Oise glides grey and glassy between bare-banked willows, its water holding the low light of a January afternoon in a haze of pearl and slate. This Gustave Loiseau river scene reads as oil on canvas, the surface worked in the small, layered touches of post impressionism: icy brushstrokes of blue-green where the current slows, pale crusts of white along the towpath, and a sky pressed down in damp violet cloud. Loiseau, the French painter of the Seine valley, built winter out of cold pigment rather than black outline, so frost and fog seem to breathe within the paint itself. A hushed presence in a study, hallway, or sitting room with north light.
