The Oak

A single oak fills the canvas in Guy Rose's painting, its trunk leaning slightly as it holds a full crown of leaves against open sky. Rose painted the foliage in small dabs of olive, sap green and yellow ochre, letting patches of blue light break through the canopy. The bark carries thick impasto ridges in gray and warm brown, built up stroke by stroke until the trunk feels rough to the eye. Grass at the base is a loose scatter of green and ochre strokes. A quiet, grounded subject for a study, reading nook or hallway where natural light and earth tones set the tone.
