The Normandy River

A slow river fills the frame, its surface broken into short strokes of green and grey that shiver under a pale Norman sky. Gustave Loiseau painted these waterways again and again, and here the current carries the whole composition. Willows lean from the bank, their foliage dabbed in olive and sap green. Cattle drink at the shallows, a red-roofed farm sits back among poplars, and clouds drag soft shadow across the meadows. Every plane of grass and water is built from small, deliberate touches of oil paint. Suited to a study or a quiet reading nook, where its cool greens and unhurried water give the eye somewhere calm to rest.
