The Nile at Aswan

Feluccas tilt across the water, their lateen sails catching the low sun over Aswan. Slevogt painted the Nile as pure light and movement, water broken into quick strokes of ochre, violet and chalk white. The river dominates everything. Dunes burn orange along the far bank, palm shadows fall in long violet bands, and the water itself shifts from milky gold near the horizon to deep green in the foreground. His brushwork stays loose and wet, more sketchbook than finished salon canvas, which is exactly what gives the scene its heat. Suits a study or reading nook with warm neutrals, where the golds and greens of the river can carry the whole wall.
