The Mountain

A forested peak fills the frame edge to edge, its summit cut off so the mass reads as pure weight. Emily Carr titled it plainly: The Mountain. Carr painted the British Columbia landscape in sweeping, loaded strokes, the greens pushed almost to black in the ravines and dragged in pale verticals along the trunks. Sky shows through in thin blues behind the ridgeline, and the brushwork follows the grain of the wood, each cedar spelled out in short, urgent marks. A study or a north-facing reading nook, where something brooding and northern belongs.
