The Moon

A full moon hangs over a dark waterway, its pale disc repeated in long broken reflections across the surface below. The Moon by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva renders night as a study in silver and black. Ostroumova-Lebedeva worked as a woodcut artist, and the image carries her hand everywhere: dense crosshatching builds the sky, thin white gouges carve ripples through the water, and the moonlight itself is left as bare paper against the inked ground. Cold grays deepen into blue-black where rooftops and embankment walls cut across the glow. Nothing is softened; the blade does the drawing. It belongs above a writing desk or in a quiet reading nook, where lamplight after dark picks up every carved line.
