The March Wind

A woman leans into a hard March gust on a city street, her dark coat snapping, cheeks wind-scoured red, one gloved hand pinning her hat against the weather. Robert Henri turns an ordinary blustery walk into a study of resistance, paint laid on in broad, confident strokes of slate blue, charcoal, and bruised violet, with that flush of face color catching the cold light. The background stays loose and scumbled, so the figure seems pushed forward by the wind itself. American realism at its most direct, built from thick impasto and unflinching observation.
