The Mantle of the Pope

A papal vestment fills the sheet from hem to collar. Albrecht Durer renders the mantle of the Pope as a garment of state, every pleat and hem line given the same close attention he paid to faces. Broad vertical folds run the full height of the figure. Ink lines bunch and loosen at the sleeves, crosshatching darkens the shadowed inner curves, and the fabric carries real weight where it gathers. The open front reveals a lined interior, drawn with quick, sure strokes. Durer made drawings like this as reference records of dress, rank, and ceremony.
