The Man with the Cart

A farmer trundles his loaded cart along a rutted country lane, figure bent to the pull of the handles. Ivan Grohar painted Slovene rural life with unsentimental honesty, and here the load, the harness, and the dust of the road carry the whole story. Heavy impasto builds the rough timber of the cart bed, while muted umbers and soft greys settle over the working clothes and the pale sky behind. The horse strains forward, every muscle caught in quick, loaded brushstrokes. A study or farmhouse entryway earns real weight from such an earthbound scene.
