The Little Falls Sketch

A waterfall threads down dark rock, split by a shoulder of stone into two narrow chutes. The Little Falls Sketch captures that split at its most immediate. Fast strokes of cream and slate build the falling water, while deep greens and burnt sienna crowd the banks. The brushwork stays loose and urgent, the way a plein air study should, every ledge and eddy set down in a single decisive pass. MacDonald, leading voice of the Group of Seven, worked these northern rivers again and again, and the speed of observation still shows in the surface.
