The Lake Lema, Effect of the Evening

Evening closes over Lake Lema. Felix Vallotton builds the scene from broad, unhurried bands of color: a rose and apricot sky thinning to pale gold, the water below answering in cold violet and slate. A dark shoreline cuts across the lower edge, its trees flattened into near-black silhouettes. Light pools on the surface in a single broken column. The Nabi discipline is everywhere: shape reduced, tone simplified, the horizon held level and calm.
