The Lake District for Holidays, Honister Crag

Honister Crag rises dark and sheer above a green valley floor, painted by Algernon Talmage for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. A holiday poster built to sell Lakeland air. Slate blues dominate the rock face, laid down in broad confident brushstrokes that let the stone feel wet and mineral. Below, a road threads between stone walls, and a scatter of figures in the valley gives the fell its scale. Clouds drag across the summit in pale grays, breaking to let light through onto the fells. A natural fit above a mantel or in a reading nook with mountain maps and travel books close at hand.
