The Kalverstraat, Celebrating the Birth of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands

Orange banners and tricolor flags stretch down the Kalverstraat as crowds press along the storefronts. Isaac Israels painted the street scene when Amsterdam celebrated the birth of Princess Juliana on 1 May 1909. Loose impressionist brushwork turns the shoppers and strollers into quick silhouettes, hats and long skirts dabbed in with a few loaded strokes. Grey Dutch light washes the brick facades. Strings of pennants flicker above the awnings, their brightness doubled in the wet street below. A canal house hallway or living room suits it, where the memory of a royal birthday keeps company with books, coats and everyday comings and goings.

A stretched canvas: the image is printed on a cotton-polyester weave (300–350 gsm) and wrapped over FSC-certified wood stretcher bars. A hanging kit is included, so no frame or extra hardware is needed.

Dust with a soft, dry cloth only — avoid water or cleaning products on the canvas face — and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators.

As a guide, a piece hung above furniture should span roughly two-thirds of that furniture width. If you are between two sizes, the larger option almost always reads better on the wall than expected.
