The Harbour at St. Jean Cap Ferrat

Boats rest at their moorings beneath the eucalyptus-dotted slopes of the Riviera coast, rendered in the confident brushwork of Winston Churchill. The Harbour at St. Jean Cap Ferrat captures a Mediterranean afternoon in oil paint. Deep cobalt water fills the lower register, flecked with pale hulls and rigging. Along the shore, terracotta villas and warm ochre walls climb the hillside in loose, sunlit blocks, while the bulk of Cap Ferrat itself presses green against the horizon. Churchill applied color in short, decisive strokes, letting sea and stone breathe through one another.
