The Harbor at Cassis

Boats crowd the water below the cliffs at Cassis, their masts a lattice of dark lines against the light. Samuel Peploe built this harbor scene from flat, decisive strokes of color rather than drawn outline. The village climbs the hillside in stepped blocks of cream and terracotta, roofs catching the midday glare. Water holds the deepest saturation in the composition, a green so dense it reads almost black where hulls cut through it. Shadow falls in single confident slabs, the way Provencal noon throws shade without apology. Hills behind rise in warm ochre, scrubbed with dabs of olive green where pine covers the slope.
