The Hand of the Violinist

A bow arm sweeps across the picture plane, fingers blurring into ribbons of motion. The Hand of the Violinist by Giacomo Balla chases a single gesture mid performance. The composition breaks the playing arm into layered, translucent arcs, ochre and umber strata overlapping like frames of film. Each repetition of the hand sits slightly ahead of the last, so the bow seems to drag sound behind it. The wrist dissolves where speed takes over, while the fingertips at the strings stay sharp and certain. Suits a music room or a hallway where something kinetic sets the pace.
