The Greatest and Holiest of Tangla

Blue peaks of the Tangla range climb through cold air, painted by Nicholas Roerich as The Greatest and Holiest of Tangla. Snow sits hard on the ridgelines. Roerich builds the mountain out of layered cobalt, ultramarine, and near-white tempera, each slope edged in sharpened contour lines that catch light like glazed ice. Low foothills in violet and slate descend toward a plain where tiny shelters and prayer flags mark the human scale against overwhelming altitude. The sky above holds a pale, luminous wash. A study or hallway with strong daylight suits this austere Himalayan presence, especially against dark wood and stone.
