The Ginger Jar

A squat ginger jar anchors the table, its glaze a deep mossy green that catches the light along one shoulder. Samuel Peploe builds the whole arrangement around that single dark weight. Around it, fruit and drapery do quiet work. Lemons lean against the jar in chalky yellows, their skins scored with quick dark strokes. A pale cloth folds behind, its edges dragged thickly so the paint sits on the surface like plaster. Background blues run cold against the warm fruit, each plane flattened and re-edged in black. Suited to a dining room or a kitchen with north light, where strong color and simple forms can hold their own on a plain wall.
