About this work

The Gate and the Road to Etyup

A heavy stone gate opens onto a pale road winding toward the hills of Etyup, the old Armenian quarter on the far side of the Golden Horn. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva renders the scene in woodcut, all black line and white paper doing equal work. Cobblestones are suggested by short hatch marks. The gate arch reads as a single dark mass, its shadow spilling across the road while sunlight strikes the whitewashed wall beside it. Cypresses and tiled rooftops recede in increasingly sparse strokes, the road narrowing to a thin scratch of ink at the horizon. A quiet, architectural image suited to a hallway or study shelf facing a window.
