The First Cry

One newborn head, mouth flung open mid-wail, rises from a smooth block of pale marble. Brâncuși carved The First Cry down to its essentials: skull, cheeks, that single urgent sound. The surface takes a high polish, so light slides across the crown and pools where the brow creases. Eyes stay sealed, newborn shut, while the mouth gapes in a small dark oval that anchors everything. Ears reduce to shallow shells pressed flat; the whole form swells like something just born. Set it where mornings begin: a nursery corner, a hallway table, the shelf beside a reading chair. Its quiet scale rewards close looking, again and again.
