The Family of Trees

Dark trunks press shoulder to shoulder like figures at a gathering, crowns merging into one unbroken canopy. Felix Vallotton named The Family of Trees for that resemblance, and the title reads true at a glance. Paint sits flat and even, almost without shadow, in the Nabi habit: deep forest green blocked against a paler ground, trunks reduced to slim verticals outlined in near black. Ochre warms the base where light slips beneath the leaves, and spacing between trunks does the work of drawing. A study or reading nook suits it best; the composition asks for quiet company, a linen sofa, low lamplight, and nothing competing for attention.
