The Entrance to the Villa Beaulieu in Honfleur

An iron gate closed against the weather, and behind it a garden gone still. The Entrance to the Villa Beaulieu in Honfleur, also known as Before the Storm, is Felix Vallotton at his most watchful. Painted in flat, confident planes of oil color, the facade rises pale and symmetrical above clipped hedges, its windows dark under a sky that has turned the color of wet slate. Grey greens dominate the foreground, broken by the ochre of the gravel path and the black scrollwork of the gate. Vallotton compresses depth until the house reads almost like a stage set, everything squared and waiting. A hallway or stair landing with cool light suits it, where the coming storm can hang on the wall all day.
