The English Embankment at Snow

Snow falls over the granite parapet of the English Embankment, and Mstislav Dobuzhinsky catches the hush of it in ink and wash. The Neva glints dull silver beyond the railing while the city holds its breath under white. Look closely and the structure reveals itself: pilasters on the waterfront facades picked out in cool grey, rooftops dissolving into a pale sky, fine crosshatching building shadow along the cornices. The snow itself is left almost bare, letting the paper do the work. Muted blues and smoky charcoal carry the whole composition. A quiet, wintry presence for a hallway, library reading corner, or any room that welcomes city scenes with literary weight.
