The Elements

Wind has bent a stand of pines sideways while the sky churns like water pulled down a drain: The Elements, a tempest scene by Group of Seven painter J. E. H. MacDonald. Thick oil impasto builds the whole surface. Slate and storm grey are dragged across the clouds in short hard strokes, ochre and umber are scored into twisted trunks, and every mark leans the way the gust leans. A strip of cold lake shivers at the horizon. Hang it where weather is welcome: a north-light study, a hallway that faces the door, a reading nook that wants a little thunder at close range.
