The District Court

Tall windows throw pale light across a courtroom where clerks, advocates, and witnesses wait beneath a raised bench. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky draws the district court with dry, precise pen work. Grey-green washes pool behind crosshatched shadows; the wood panelling, the judge dais, and rows of dark coats carry the same smoky tone. Every figure is hunched and deferential, caught mid-gesture. The architecture dominates: pilasters, a high coffered ceiling, doors that swallow the light. It belongs in a study or reading room, among leather-bound spines and dark furniture, where its grey palette reads as quiet rather than grim.
