The Destruction of Atlantis

A volcano tears the island kingdom open. Nicholas Roerich paints the destruction of Atlantis at its final hour, molten rock climbing the sky while the doomed civilization burns below. Tempera gives the fire a dry, powdery glow, layered in vermilion and violet with orange breaking through the seams. Small figures crowd the shoreline while marble columns tilt into indigo water, and sulfur light stains the underside of every cloud. Hang it where low lamplight falls: a library reading corner, a dim study, anywhere the last red glow of a lost world rewards a long look.
