The Descent Of Night

Night drops low over the land in The Descent Of Night, a work from Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Deep blues and violet shadows press down across the whole scene. Below, pale sky and thin water catch the last grey light. Mackintosh handles the mood with restraint. Soft washes of indigo, slate and misted rose settle into layered bands, while the horizon holds a single narrow seam of brightness. His lines stay quiet, almost architectural, letting colour do the work. The air feels cold and still, a hillside exhaling into darkness.
