The Death of Oze

A warrior lies fallen on open snow, kin bending close as daylight drains away. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene The Death of Oze, a moment drawn from Russian legend. Flat planes of violet and slate build the hills, and a cold river unspools under a bruised sky. Tempera lends the drifts a chalky matte grain, while the mourning figures kneel in still, angular postures, dark against all that emptiness. A study or reading nook suits the mood: the wintry palette sharpens lamplight and leather spines, lending a room the hush of a saga told at dusk.
