About this work

The Crossed Trees

Two bare trunks cross above the Harlem River, their branches locking like a wooden X against the winter sky. Ernest Lawson titled it The Crossed Trees, and the crossing is the whole event. Lawson builds the scene in thick, loaded brushwork: ice-hued strokes of blue-white along the banks, a road of packed snow running between them, low rooftops and a factory chimney smudged into the far shore. The trees stand nearly black, their limbs drawn with hard, calligraphic lines that cut through all that pale impasto. It suits a hallway or a reading nook where the light stays soft and the walls want something quiet and cold-eyed.
