The Croft, Still Life with Divan

A low divan draped in patterned cloth anchors the room while jugs, fruit, and folded drapery crowd the foreground of The Croft, Still Life with Divan, Frances Hodgkins at her most quietly domestic. Calligraphic contour lines trace the curve of a glazed jug, the round weight of fruit, and the slump of upholstery beneath a striped cushion. Washes of rose madder and slate blue pool across the fabric, while a whitewashed cottage wall glows pale behind the whole arrangement. It belongs in a reading nook or a sitting room with worn linen and low lamplight, where its sketchbook line and soft, muted palette settle in easily.
