The Cote d'Azur

Palm fronds and terracotta rooftops tumble toward a strip of Mediterranean blue, all compressed into one luminous plane of color. The Cote d'Azur distills the Riviera into Bonnard's signature language of saturated pigment and flattened space. Ultramarine water sits beneath a sky of chalky white, while blocks of vermilion, ochre, and sunflower yellow build the hillside town above the bay. Brushwork stays loose and visible throughout, with color doing the structural work that drawing would elsewhere. The composition reads almost as tapestry, each hue woven tight against its neighbor. Suited to a sunlit breakfast room or a hallway that needs a jolt of southern light, wherever afternoons run long and warm.
