The Coal Scuttles

Squat, riveted scuttles heaped with coal fill the foreground of this still life by Felix Vallotton. The title, The Coal Scuttles, names the subject plainly, and the picture keeps the same blunt honesty. Deep blacks press against a chalky pale ground, the Nabi habit of flat, hard contour drawn clean around every seam and rolled edge. Faint blue glints flicker across the fuel. A long-handled shovel rests at one side, its tin surface holding a cool sheen. A study with a hearth, a kitchen with stone counters, or a reading nook beside a cold fireplace: rooms built around warmth take to its sooty palette at once.
