The City

Towers rise in pale tiers above a sleeping plain. The city, painted by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, gathers turrets and domes into one quiet, weightless silhouette against a washed sky. Look closely and the architecture dissolves into suggestion: ochre walls, cool grey shadows, spires that thin into the atmosphere like smoke. Streets are absent. Only the rooftops remain, stacked and hushed, their edges softened by a violet haze that spreads across the middle distance. Ciurlionis painted cities the way a composer writes a chord, all parts held at once. This image settles well in a study or reading room, where its stillness rewards long, unhurried looking.
